There are many processes and products that require dehumidification. Designing a drying system can be a challenge given the many variables that play a role in the performance of the system such as air flow, temperature and humidity. What is the best dehumidifier?

Reinders Industrial manufactures dryers based on either of two principles. The first principle is that moistures in an air stream condensates on a surface with a temperature that is below the dew point of that air stream. This principle is called condensation drying or condense drying. The second principle is that some materials like silica gel have the ability to adsorb moisture. The moisture from the air stream is captured by the adsorbent. At Reinders Industrial we use this principle called adsorption drying in drying wheels or rotors. These rotors are divided in two sections: a process air section through which the air stream that needs to be dehydrated is led, and a regeneration section through which an air stream is led that takes the moisture out of the rotor. The rotor slowly rotates across these streams transporting moisture from the process air stream to the regeneration air stream. When low contents of moisture are required, adsorption drying is an efficient way of achieving this. Often these two principles are combined in what we call a hybrid dehumidifier. Good ventilation is important in a company. To get this right, it is handy to use a ventilation dryer.

How do commercial and industrial dehumidifiers work?

Dehumidifiers work by drawing moist air from the room through a duct. Once the moist air encounters a cold surface like cooling coils, the moisture condenses. The air is then moved through a large rotating wheel (Drying Wheel or Rotor). The drying wheel contains a water absorbing material, a desiccant, which collects the moist from the air, making the air humidity drop to a low level. For maximum efficiency, the air is pre- heated. Afterwards it is cooled to the desired temperature and blown out through an exhaust duct. Dehumidifiers can have both a collection drip or a removable water reservoir. Some of Reinders Industrial’s larger industrial dehumidifiers are equipped with a full built-in pump system to automatically dispose the water.

Air changes per hour or ACH, the recommendations based on the humidity levels:

Air changes per hour is a statistic that explains how many times the air of a single space or several spaces combined should be dried by the dehumidification unit. The efficiency and energy usage of the system play a vital role in every environment and industry, however our advice based on the humidify levels is the following;

  • Extremely wet conditions:
    Humidity level of 85%-100% requires a high ACH. Water is present in the area.
  • Wet:
    Humidity level of 75%-85%, requires a medium to high ACH. The area has visible water and wet spots.
  • Very Damp:
    Humidity level of 65%-75%, requires a medium ACH. Moisture is present in the area on the walls or floor.
  • Damp:
    Humidity level of 55%-65%, requires a low to medium ACH. The area is damp and moisture is present in the room.

How much water can an industrial or commercial drying system remove?

The amount of water a dryer can remove, varies and both very small and very large systems are possible. The required humidity level, moist and square foot/cubic meter are key factors for the design. The larger the dryer, the more water removal is possible. Naturally, a large warehouse or room would in most cases also require a larger dryer. The required system is based on the production or manufacturing process taking place in the area. An industrial dryer will protect and control the perfect humidity.

Experience shows that each process or product has different requirements for optimal process conditions. Over the years, Reinders Industrial has designed many installations, fully customized. Our tailor-made installations are based on several basic principles, but each installation is unique and is adapted to your process and business in several ways. These include the desired drying temperature, stepless and precise control of the installation, software tailored to your needs, remote monitoring and service or data logging.

Tailor-made: HPR and HXE series adsorption dryers

The drying units in the HPR and HPX series involve some pre-engineered configurations with different capacities. The quantities of dry air supplied vary between 3,000 and 18,000 cubic meters of dried air per hour. However, experience shows that a hybrid or adsorption dryer is almost always a custom product and must operate at a variety of design conditions, for example, on recirculation through the drying chamber or drying from a constant outside air supply. Using a heat pump operation to dehumidify even at very low temperatures and any necessary post-treatment of dried air (heating or cooling) can be integrated into the plant. We have prepared one basic configuration for drying outdoor air of 28°C and 14 grams of moisture per kilogram of air (a common starting point for adsorption drying, annual incidence approx. 15-20 hours) to a moisture content of 3 without post-treatment of dried air. The rest of the year the plant can run at lower capacity.

Note: Drying to an absolute moisture content lower than 3 produces an exponential increase in required installed cooling capacity and investment costs, and depends on the maximum design conditions chosen. In many deployment areas, a higher minimum absolute humidity of, for example, 4 or 5 and/or more moderate design conditions are sufficient.

We work with rotors up to a diameter of 4250 mm to supply approximately 100,000 m3 dried process air per hour.
